Got a cell phone

I never had the need or desire to have a cell phone. Back in my consulting days in MN, it was somewhat of a necessity, and my cell phone was a big pain in the rear: too many people had the number, and I would get way too many calls at strange times about technical problems that people were having. Screening isn’t the same with a cell phone, because you’ve got caller ID built in, so you know who’s calling, and they know you know who’s calling, and there’s this unspoken expectation that by having a cell phone, you’re just always available for interruption.
So, when I moved out to Seattle, I closed the contract in MN and never opened one out here.
I guess I’ve always just had a bit of a thing with phones. I mean, I think they’re great to reach out on, but a few years ago, I’ve stopped always answering them. Sometimes at work I’ll be in a meeting and the phone will ring, and people will be surprised if I don’t answer it. The worst are the people who send you an email, then call you, then email again and then stop by.
Well, that all changed today. I went out and got a cell phone today, through AT&T Wireless. I said I wouldn’t, but I did. The thing that really did it was the free long distance. Combined with the fact that I’m the western-most of my relatives, free long distance and cellular convenince means I can keep in touch during business hours here, and before everyone’s in bed there.
I also like that I can download all of my contact information from my computer to the phone. That’s handy, and means all I have to do is keep my Outlook address book current, and I can update the phone just by plugging it in. That I can do.
AT&T also allows a bit of online services over the phone and supports email to a limited extent, but frankly it’s just too slow and cumbersome in my opinion. We’ll see on that, but I think in a few years time I’ll be solely cell, and I’ll lose my land line. Hopefully at that point the technology can catch up a bit, and I can get a phone with decent email and web surfing built in.
