Boerner family fruit salad
Posted Jul 28, 2004 at 10:54 PM
The recipe for the salad that folks out here call ambrosia. Regardless, this is the dish worth saving your salad bowl for on Easter, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any other day special enough to warrant a big bowl of this colorful, cheery sweetness.
As good today as it was when I was a kid; chances are if I’m not at home for the holidays, I’ll bring along a bowl of this jiggling goodness to wherever I end up. Ah, the simple joy of comfort food. If I’m home, someone will beat me to it. Ah, family.
Ingredients
- fruit cocktail, 1 large can
- mandarin oranges, 1 large can
- pineapple chunks, 1 large can
- maraschino cherries, 1 jar
- sour creme, 8 oz. container
- mini marshmellows (white), 10 oz.
- 2 banannas
Cooking time
1 night and 30 minutes
Directions
- Get all of the ingredients the night before.
- Place all of the ingredients but the bananas and marshmellows in the fridge to chill for the night.
- Open all of the cans and jars, drain completely.
- In a large bowl, add the fruit cocktail, oranges, pineapple.
- Slice the cherries in half, adding to the bowl as you go.
- Mix in the sour creme.
- Mix in the marshmellows. They have to be white. Don’t even think about using colored ones.
- Cover bowl and return to fridge.
- If you’re taking it to a pot-luck, take the bananas with you.
- Immediately before serving, add banana slices and mix.
Servings
About 8-12, depending on size, seconds and main course.
