About Daniel Boerner & danboe.net

A picture of me, Daniel Boernerdanboe.net is the personal web site of Daniel Boerner, a web developer currently residing in Seattle, WA, affectionately known to some simply as danboe. This site was launched on the weekend of August 20, 2004 (the 6th anniversary of my move from Minneapolis to Seattle). It is the first personal site I’ve ever created, even though I’ve been building web sites since the early 1990’s.

The idea for the site started with a desire to place my ever-growing music library online, and also features a blog that contains personal thoughts and opinions related to my work, interests and life. I also enjoy reading books, watching movies as well as taking and sharing photos.

Through the wonders of the web, radio- and commercial-free danboe.net broadcasts in plain text from Seattle, Washington to visitors near and far.

Site blueprints

danboe.net is reliably and affordably hosted by TextDrive. I’ve been very happy with their service and support, and they have saved my bacon after countless stupid mistakes I’ve made in the process of building and running this site.

If you’re interested in the nuts and bolts, danboe.net employs Textpattern to publish the blog and commenting aspects of this site. I hope to one day add several custom plugins, scripts and other logic for various enhancements, special features or fun.

Site goals and standards

I strive to use valid XHTML 1.0 Strict for markup and valid CSS for presentation and design. When I decide to add client-side behavior to some feature, I’ll strive to use standard Javascript and the W3C DOM over proprietary, browser independent approaches I’ve clung to so strongly in the past. I do this to help encourage others to take a web standards approach, and to keep myself challenged and honest. My blog discusses this quest quite a bit, so I won’t rant here. Suffice it to say that such an approach allows for increased accessibility, smaller page sizes and relative predictability across browsers. The intent is to avoid conditional code at all costs, since this site is my pasttime, and should remain enjoyable. While the design utilizes CSS that modern browsers can handle, all of this site’s contents should remain readable and fully functional in older browsers as well as devices such as phones and PDAs.

The footer links that appear on the bottom of every page provide one-click validation against these standards. Feel free to validate my pages, I only ask that if you find a problem, please drop me a note so that I can correct it.

Under construction

danboe.net, like the Web itself, is an evolving place. Aside from updating data such as my music files and writing blog posts, I will continue to work on the presentational aspects of the site. Please forgive my mess as I do this, and please know that my intent is not to leave the Christmas lights up all year long here. If you find something to be continually broken and it’s keeping you up at night, by all means, let me know.

or the Bizarro danboe

I guess I was too late to the party; when I went to get my preferred domain name, it was already taken. Same with my preferred hotmail account. If you're here hoping to get your Houston, TX insurance needs satisfied, or you're planning to hit the fairways while in Texas, you're only a click away. Like a good neighbor, the Bizarro danboe is there.
